The Yamas are the first limb of Patanjali’s Eight Limbs of Yoga, often called the restraints or moral disciplines. They are not rigid commandments but guiding principles for living in harmony with others and the world. The Yamas ask us to refine how we use our energy in relationship, through kindness, honesty, moderation, and respect. By practicing them, we purify the outer layer of life, preparing the inner self for deeper yoga.
In this foundation, we’ll explore the five Yamas: ahimsa, satya, asteya, brahmacharya, and aparigraha, timeless principles that create harmony in daily living.
Ahimsa means non-harming, in thought, word, and action. Practicing ahimsa turns life into an offering of peace, softening aggression into compassion.
🌱 Compassion in Action
Living with kindness toward all beings, including ourselves.
🧠 Non-Harmful Thinking
Avoiding self-criticism and judgment of others.
🌍 Ecological Respect
Ahimsa extends to how we treat nature and the planet.
Satya is alignment with truth, in both speech and living. Satya is integrity, a life where words, actions, and being are one.
🗣 Honest Speech
Speaking clearly, without deception or manipulation.
🧘 Living Truthfully
Aligning actions with inner values, avoiding hypocrisy.
⚖️ Truth with Compassion
Truth is never harsh for its own sake; it is tempered with kindness (ahimsa).
Asteya means not taking what does not belong to us, physically, emotionally, or energetically. Asteya reminds us that abundance flows when we respect the rightful place of all things.
💎 Material Respect
Avoiding theft or exploitation of resources.
⏳ Respecting Time & Energy
Not stealing others’ attention or overstepping boundaries.
🧠 Inner Sufficiency
Releasing envy and cultivating gratitude for what we have.
Traditionally interpreted as celibacy, brahmacharya more deeply means wise use of life-force. Brahmacharya transforms energy into vitality, discipline, and devotion.
🌬 Moderation
Avoiding extremes of indulgence or repression.
💡 Conscious Energy
Channeling sexual, creative, and physical energy into higher awareness.
🧘 Alignment with Spirit
Living in a way where every action is infused with sacredness.
Aparigraha is the release of grasping, hoarding, and clinging.
👐 Letting Go
Freedom from attachment to possessions, people, or outcomes.
🌙 Simplicity
Living with enough, without excess or greed.
🌀 Openness to Flow
By not clinging, we allow new possibilities and spiritual growth to unfold.
Aparigraha frees us from fear of loss, revealing abundance in simplicity.
